Earthport

by Jerry Wright

I stand on the dock at Earthport
and watch the starships lift
like leaves blown into an autumn sky
by the gentle agrav gift.

I watch the crowds roll by me
some heading out, some in
an angular Doradan,
a hive of Hyadan "kin".

A "truman" saunters by me.
A "starman" like as not.
What stranger skies and seas he's seen...
What journeys has he sought?

I dream of going with him
to Space that's dark and free
to sail the universal foam
and kiss eternity.

Why must I gaze with longing
at dreams I cannot share?
We second class, we Earthling trash
who live under your care.
