It seems to me life is a game and death is a game in all of the four stories. Sometimes the game of life vies with the game of death, and sometimes they are two different games. But who are the game masters? is the question all the stories tend to ask, in one way or another. The subtle game of “find the rule makers” underlies the games in all of them.

Thank you, John! That’s quite an existential take on the question. For example, if life is a game, is death, then, the absence of one? Or is it another “game” entirely, as you say, perhaps with a completely different set of rules? And who’s running the show, anyway? That’s a lot to think about, all right.
