Norman A. Rubin’s “The Taste of Bitterness” shows us how the contingencies of existence can conspire to concoct a truly ironic fate. That’s a theme dear to such writers as Jean-Paul Sartre. But let’s look at it from a more traditional angle: What might be the moral of the story? Don’t leave loaded sandwiches lying around? There may be more to it, don’t you think?
