Challenge 89

The Cheshire-Cat Identity

This issue is pretty big, so we’ll keep the Challenge short. In Ásgrímur Hartmannsson’s “The Missing Person,” Maria seems to be quite an ordinary office worker until she mysteriously vanishes without a trace, house and all, and people begin to forget she exists. Even her brother doesn’t remember her. Are the people who remember her best the ones who knew her least?

Trouble is, that’s where “The Missing Person” ends, right where the story is just beginning. Your Challenge is: imagine the larger story behind Maria and her disappearance. And send us a scenario for the middle or end of the whole story.

Don’t worry: you’ll still be here when we come back.
