Ahmad Al-Khamisi

The author is from Cairo, Egypt and is a journalist and translator. He has a PhD from the University of Moscow. He has won prizes for two short story collections and a play.

“Two Escapees” begins conventionally enough with a conversation between a newspaper editor and a cartoonist. But it becomes apparent that they both have much to fear from dictatorships in all parts of the world. So much, in fact, that they must erase all traces of their possible identification in the story itself. What in earlier times might have seemed to be a humorous form of self-aware literature becomes an object lesson in self-preservation in today’s world.
