“The Paradox Garden” will attract readers’ appreciation for young botanist Maya Chen, who benefits from the counsel of a time-traveling older self concerning a fern that evolves with extraordinary rapidity. One might nornally think that such an organism might pose a threat by mutating at a rate that stands outside of time, but it may be inadvertently encouraging humans to prepare hurriedly for the future in order to meet the difficulties of the present.
