On the way back from Skaftafell to Reykjavik in Iceland, our tour guide took us on a hike across one of the glaciers. With my crampons on, I followed him towards a deep pit in the ice pack. Unable to resist the opportunity, I crept as close as my courage would allow until my knees started to shake. I realized, too late, before I took the shot that there was no rope tethering me to the guide. And the guide had only an ice axe to to prevent us from tumbling into the stygian depths.
