Fatherly Duty

When I was young
no one read to me,
so I made sure later
to read to my daughter,
never anticipating
I’d have to read
“Benny the Bunny”
over and over
until I loathed
the innocent rabbit
and fell prey
time after time
to my daughter’s demand:
“Read it again, Daddy.”
