Inspired Ventures

by Sultana Raza

With passive foliage don’t dress your poem’s bones.
From empty pockets if you pull out lines,
Try to make sure they’re slim and fine
Like lace-like lattice-work carved in stone.

Drunk or sober, cheerful or sour,
On too many adjectives, should you feast,
Leave some adverbs for others at least,
Or your poem will be stuck in a lackluster tower.

When your oil is gone, lamp is dry,
Take a well-earned break if you can’t think.
If your boat glides metrically on a pond of ink,
Then it’s the moment to learn to fly.

If reflecting on life, your verse floats like a cloud,
Then for some it will stand out from prosaic crowds.
