The Dying Place of Deer

by Andrew Brenza

What found the skull alive in leaflitter
quivered on the surface of the stream
between stones, where water striders skittered,
green and yellow smears of viscous dream

undulating through the solemn ferns
like hands unthreading what the sunlight wove
in air so heady that sight seemed to blur,
and bones burned as white as incandescent coals.
