“The Effigies of Emory Street” will raise some questions in readers’ minds. Are Frances’ ”Needlework. Handicrafts” limited to fashioning “effigies” of herself and her husband? Or is the “needlework” her ability to get the locals excited about exorcising superstitious haunts? And maybe a “handicraft” consists in posing as her own statue in the dark. Whichever, the grand old lady of Emory Street seems to get exactly what she wants by exercising some subterfuginous power.
