Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Riley Kilmore
If you ever hear young people wonder what they might do “when they grow up,” you can refer them to Riley Kilmore’s bio page. They’ll exclaim in bewildered admiration: “Wow, she’s gone everywhere and done everything! Is there anything left for me?” And then you can console the youth by saying Riley has set a good example. And on top of it all, she has published prose and poetry voluminously.
“A Night in the Shining Armoire” might carry a readers’ caution: it’s a horror story in which a child tells of systematic physical abuse by the mother. The story will raise a number of questions, such as: Is the child a girl or a boy? Does it matter? And how does the story end? What happens to the mother? To the child? Is either or are both alive at the end? Various interpretations can be made, but they recede into the background of the story’s well-depicted centre, which is the child’s having to live for years in a state of terror.
