“Master Pohrobek” contains an implicit caution to artists seeking favor in the post-feudal nobilities of Europe. If an appreciative and sympathetic customer cannot be found among the living, one may as well go and seek one among the dead. Even the artist’s name, we’re told, suggests a coffin. Modern-day readers are left with questions, such as: Even though painting and pictorial art could survive being reduced to playing cards, can it survive modern technology?
