Serenity in the Summer Season

by Ralph S. Souders

Scattered clouds drift slowly across the star-laden sky.
A thicket of brush and pine is silhouetted in the moonglow.
Crickets chirp in the moist, dew-dripping weeds
while locusts sing, and fireflies flicker their lights.
The water makes distinctive sounds as a bullfrog jumps,
and an antlered deer drinks from the pond.
The meager breeze feels almost inert in the warm, humid air.
I stare outside through a screened cabin window,
as my random thoughts meander, and time passes by.
