“Call of the Djinn” will surely impress readers as a remarkable combination of fantasy and cultural identity in an Arabian locale. The setting appears to be medieval, and yet the hero of the story, Ahmed, experiences a timeless — and, thereby, quite modern — blow to his faith when his family is lost in a catastrophic accident. Does Ahmed’s experience with the age-old, fantastical Djinn restore his faith? Yes, but by no means blindly; he is brought to a modern — and, again, timeless — understanding of its meaning.
