Back When We Were Stardust

by Shauna Checkley

Back when we were stardust,
We exfoliated in ashes, rubbed ourselves clean,
Breathing in and then exhaling the cosmos.
We reflected on everywhere that we had been.

Back when we were stardust,
We knew that we were exploded supernovas,
Cancelled constellations, golden debris,
The must and rust from the hearts of stars.

Back when we were stardust,
We bled filmy elements, building blocks.
Our nervous systems pumped in unison
Our heritages were in sync.
