Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Justin Carlos Alcalá
Justin is a Mexican-American who is a native of Chicago but now lives in the mountains of North Carolina. In twelve years, he has published four novels and more than thirty stories in literary journals, to much acclaim. Justin specializes in horror and dark fiction.
“The Rambler” is described by the author as “darkly comic,” which seems quite accurate. The story is truly Bewildering in the sense that it raises interesting questions.
The main character, Adam, feels trapped in an onerous and tiresome occupation. He would like nothing more than to escape to a cabin in the mountain woods, at least for a vacation. Once there, he is frightened by an intruder who disables Adam’s automobile and who sings colourful ditties. Adam lies in wait but cannot espy the intruder, himself. Who could it be?
Not to spoil anything, but readers will surely surmise at the proper time that there’s less going on than meets the eye. But how much less? The hidden key to the story is not really the question “Who is in it?” but “Where does it really take place?”
