Doug feels he missed a chance by not majoring in literature at “a powerful” university, but he’s making up for lost time with three initial short stories accepted in quick succession by various publications.

“Sustenance and Verse” is impressive by conveying multiple morals: kindness is not only good in itself, it may bring rewards from people who are talented yet dispossessed by chance and circumstance.
