Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Christopher Schmitz
Christopher is the author of the Kakos Realm series of fantasy novels. His shorter works are wide-ranging: science fiction, horror, fantasy, mainstream, and satire.
At first glance, “The Quarry” might appear to be a modern tale proselytizing for Protestant fundamentalism. However, in form it is a very brief miracle play.
The only change needed — other than the characters’ dress and other, superficial cultural references — would be to substitute the Virgin Mary for the more or less secular “saint” who intervenes at the end. With only a little adaptation the story could have been staged in front of a 13th-century cathedral.
