Iguana Time

by Mel Waldman

Ancient images on a beach:
a child jumping up and down,
and dancing around
a marine iguana.

But now, there’s only an iguana
struggling in a storm, blown by a
fierce wind across the sand.

And the child is an old man,
trudging across a private dreamscape,
appearing smaller and smaller as he
recedes into the distance,

until he vanishes.
