Woolacombe Sands: Evening

by John Stocks

On holiday with two small sons.

The sun surfs
a frayed edge of shallow cloud
begins the slow curve to night
as it trembles on the water.

Comes the long sunset
the grand performance
long shadows at the dipping of the day
as a west wind soothes.

Quite still; with arms on both your shoulders
the evening cools.

In the morning you will both rise
just a little older
and I will watch the waves again
and close my eyes and wonder.
