Jennifer says she stumbled by chance onto the genre of flash fiction. However she’s done it, she’s made it her own. At the other end of the scale, though, she’s already finished one novel and has started a sequel.

“Sharp Focus” has the mystery of an implied ‘larger story’ that flash fiction needs. Where is the woman laboring in the field? When? Why? And what is the “Debt”? And what does it mean to be “Sent Away”?

We’re not told the ‘larger story’ because the point is to engage the reader’s imagination by depicting a grimly detailed moment in the life of a worker in the fields.
