“Flying Angels” is constructed on dark irony: the narrator, Jackie, expresses lyrical joy at the freedom cycling on the open road, but her pleasure comes at a heavy price: the Flying Angels motorcycle gang conducts “initiation” rites that sometimes turn deadly. The reader may suspect that Jackie might well think twice about her associates if she had to undergo an initiation.
