Memories of Willoughby

by Anna Ruiz

When I arrived in Willoughby, bagless,
with nothing but the clothes on my back,
the wind in my hair,
and the utter transparency
of my words,
I heard Cerberus barking
on that lonely platform,
as if in a dream.

I couldn’t see and so I gave
two gold coins to the ferryman.
Sophia, who is always waiting,
whispered in my ear:
Did you happen to bring your memories?”
