Heather Kuehl
Heather writes fantasy, horror and, occasionally, science fiction.
“Dalamar’s Quest” appears to be a chapter in a longer work, perhaps a novella or novel. It introduces two interesting characters: the wizard Dalamar and his apprentice, Amethyst Dyier. Dalamar perishes in the struggle with a pyramid-building demon, and Amethyst, a.k.a. Amy, must now come into her own.
The story raises at least two questions of importance to any writer. If you have an interesting character, what do you risk losing by killing him off? And how shall readers pronounce difficult names, particularly one like “Dyier”? One solution: pronounce the name as though it were French; that almost always works. Thus, the female lead in the story becomes “Amy Yesterday.” And that’s not bad at all, come to think of it!
