Songs of the Lovelorn Poet

by Bill Bowler

1

Just when I feel the time is near
for asking what I always ask
or thinking I’m about to hear

the answer to my dreams at last,
I look ahead and see the past
and understand too clearly we’re

no pair and going nowhere fast
and half expect to hear you laugh
and disappear.

2

There’s nothing there.
There wasn’t anything before.
It doesn’t matter what’s in store
or not. Who cares?

No, I’m not scared
to get involved again. I’m more
prepared than then to play the part.
Though I’m aware

true love’s too rare,
I’m too self-conscious not to start.
My heart’s already torn apart
and been repaired.

3

The present’s sweet. The future’s bright!
I fell in love again last night.
First time this week I felt this way.
So this is what the real thing’s like!

When you walked in the bar last night,
first love arrived, the past took flight,
I saw the light and stayed.
No further shall my spirit stray.

With you my former urge to play
flirtatious games is through, despite
what people say, I’m past that stage
and do what’s right.

4

What’s the deal? What’s going on?
Is this the real thing?

Or am I wrong and too far gone
to know and feeling

like I needed all along
to have you near me

when really love’s a sad, sweet song
with no meaning

and nothing can be done. We’re all
asleep and dreaming.
