Smile Away

by John Grey

About your smile.
Clumsy is the perch
upon your chin
and, of course,

uneasy as a warm
front for your chill.
Try watering the life
around it

or setting your humor
in bright light
five, six hours a day.
Maybe it could

grow a life
more true, more accommodating.
to the movement of your mouth.
It might even spread roots,

you know, these strands
that connect the surface
to what you really mean.
Imagine that...

You’re glad to see me.
Your lips are too.
