Bruce Boxleitner played the role of Captain John Sheridan on Babylon 5, my all-time favourite SF tv series. He made a lot of fans happy at the Toronto Comicon on March 10-11, 2012. He has a most engaging personality — a true leader even off-screen, the type of person that you’re simply compelled to listen to — of all the stars I spoke to at the con. He has many stories to tell and a great sense of humour and a sunny disposition.
He had one of his most memorable experiences in Toronto when he was caught in the middle of a protest. “Here I was on one of those streets that sold books, I can’t remember the name, when all of a sudden there was a group of protesters on my left. And when I turned around, there was a second group coming in from the right. I was caught in between, and I didn’t even know what the protest was all about! The police came, and I shouted, ‘I’m an American! I’m a foreign national!’ Not that it made any difference.”
I laughed with him and said that a lot of people in Canada were “foreign nationals” at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, that plea would not go very far with the authorities.
