The Sea’s Spell

by Hongping Liu

When I first saw you —
the blue sea —
your graceful spell enveloped me
leaving me awestruck.

You look so young
because you identify with all rivers.
Your life’s source
is endless.

Yet you also look old,
because you have endured so much.
Facing multifarious changes,
you let the years do their worst.

You are the fount of tenderness.
In your soft arms lovers find joys,
while you are also a symbol of cruelty,
having destroyed countless innocents.

As the days are full of twists
with life’s vicissitudes,
my heart strives to approach you,
the vast blue sea.
