Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Emily Calvin
Emily lives in Portland, Oregon. She describes herself as a “cat lady” and aspiring rapper. She’s working on an M.A. degree in Creative Writing at Lesley University. She’s published extensively and says her writing has been described as “experimental, fantastical, fabulistic, disjointed, inaccessible, exceptional, and interesting.”
Readers will probably find reasons to apply most if not all of those adjectives to “Starlings in a Distant Garden.” The story takes place in a fantastical universe and contains references that may lead readers to suspect an allegory of some kind. The heroine, Natalia, becomes the pilot of a spaceship. Natalia learns that planting “starlings” in gardens has been a mistake. She can rectify it by letting the ship be wrecked or by sacrificing herself.
