Bewildering Stories welcomes...

Simon Jones

Simon lives in Australia, where he is a journalist and editor. His short fiction has appeared widely in international publications.

The Stoning of Tityos” is a curious story. A Sheriff whose family has been killed by a wild beast named Tityos takes pity on Tityos when villagers finally capture it and are about to stone it to death. He refuses to take part in the revenge ritual and, since he has no one left to live for, chooses to kill himself.

There’s only one problem. The story is narrated in the first person. And as the saying goes, “Dead men tell no tales.” The story logically cancels itself out because there’s no one left to tell it. But “Tityos” is quite well written, and we’ll not quibble over what amounts to a technicality.
