Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Merrill Cole
Merrill is a professor of English at Western Illinois University. He was recently a Fulbright Research Fellow in Germany. He has published translations from German as well as essays and poems of his own.
“A Gray Princess” is a fairy tale with a distinctly Germanic flavor. The tension between appearance and reality bring to mind the tension between reality and unreality in Gerhart Hauptmann’s Bahnwärter Thiel, for example. At the end, the gray princess’ lot is a most unhappy one: she can lead a life of tedious display or die at the hands of the Black Witch.
