Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Michael O’Farrell
Michael has retired from the Space Shuttle program and taken up writing as a second career. He enjoys science fiction and other works “out of the mainstream.”
Don’t look now, Michael, but science fiction is “mainstream”! And yet I agree; there was a time in living memory when it wasn’t. Now the world has caught up with it, and science fiction will have to revive the vision of Cyrano de Bergerac in order to stay ahead of the game.
“The Imageverse” is an essay that has already made a hit in the community of mathematicians. It is a jolly explanation of the proverbial gypsy fortune-teller’s “crystal ball.” Actually, the fortune-teller doesn’t need a cystal ball; a plain sheet of standard-size paper will do. The permutations and combinations of the pixels on the paper — within the standard margins, of course — will tell you everything about the past, present and future.
Of course there is a catch: it’s Sturgeon’s Law. And that is, after all, what everyone must deal with when setting pencil to paper!
