Summer

by Ernest B. Cohen

Summer comes, life springs forth across the land.
Green chlorophyll basks in the sun’s heat.
Algae bloom in the wave’s hand.
Insects swarm on plants they eat.

The bubbling, roiling, creativity of it all
thoughtless, life begets more life.
To steal the sun, trees grow tall,
and vines cling: cooperation amidst strife.

Herbivores harvest photons from the sun,
and carnivores upon them prey.
Man takes from all; summertime is fun
for human babes. Run, and jump, and play.
