A Comet’s Flight

by Diana Anderson

I’ve lived millions of years
rotating in the frigid reaches
of our solar system.
Now, as I glide closer
to your beaming canvas
of hydrogen and helium,
I leave behind
a trail of particles
left over from our creation.

For only a matter of days
the life you sustain
will watch as I fly by your spinning orb.
With the sacrifice of my form,
I will provide staggering beauty.
Once more I will disappear,
out of even your satellites’ sight,
into the darkness of space,
again prolonging my existence.
