Nature’s Program: Fine Dining

by Mike Acker

The living and dead are everywhere.
If I didn’t know better, I’d think
We were being recycled.

In the ocean depths, fish eat each other
With no accounting for taste.
It’s almost as bad on land:
Everything is creeping, stalking,
Galloping after fast food,
And only the fastest
or least visible isn’t food.

Where is the top of the food chain?
Everywhere, bacteria come to banquet tables
With knives, forks, napkins
At the ready, patiently serving
and waiting to be served.
