“The Carrot Is Mightier Than the Sword” will surely cause readers to admire the clever and kindly king of the Hares. And the story will charm them with its sheer love of language; the vocabulary seems to sing along as a kind of musical accompaniment. One reader says the story is reminiscent of Salman Rushie in some ways.
The story is also full of anachronisms. Not to worry; they’re comic devices. And the story has a profound moral: the meek can inherit the earth by inveigling humans into thinking they’re doing it. Perhaps that is the ultimate meaning of the title.
