Dumbfounded

by Marjorie Sadin

A deer pauses, not six feet from me.
It lopes across the street and disappears.
It is wild but unafraid.

I am wild like the deer
but not afraid to commit to you.

Like the understanding between the sun and the moon,
that take turns rising and setting,
we take turns giving and receiving.

Still I am foolish and shy.
Like the deer, I pause and retreat
Into my mind.

When I am near you,
I am a deer frozen in the light,
struck by love.
