I Laugh

by Shola Balogun

The garland of head hunters
in the land
and the barren utterances
of farted flocks

at all the wages of carnage,
I laugh

I laugh at the gods
who inherit fables
and the famished tales
of impotent shells

I laugh at the symphony
of pilfering seers
and the fox-trot

of mended mendicants
in the land

I laugh at the stinking mouthful
of coerced curses.

I laugh at the tickling tirades
of spiritual scoundrels
and the mimicry of gibberish gurus.

I laugh at their tryst

Men who play gods
In spite of themselves
