Mississippi Train Ride

by Douglas Young

Magnolias, streams,
And endless tall trees,
Confederate state flags
Flapping high in the breeze.

Cattle and hawks,
Fields, ducks, and swamps,
Many birds by ponds in packs,
Locals waving by the tracks.

So much green, and azaleas galore,
Pretty little towns I’d love to explore,
Weathered homes with an American flag,
Laughing children running and playing tag.

The terrain rolls by like a silent film,
A tranquil time warp from another realm?
All appears calm and so laid back,
Churches, barbecue — we’re on track.
