Playing Für Elise

by Mike Acker

As though a fingertip has tapped
the surface of placid waters,
electron clouds abruptly
come to life and undulate
as they enter a state of flux
within a Planckian realm.

Molecules excitedly release
old bonds, form new ones
as they twist and turn
in the midst of a vast
hydro-carbon sea.

Long chains loosen,
rattle, and roll,
reorder and relink,
as though in sync with some
faint rhythm.

Neurons are born,
branded, and united with
one another in a common cause
barely touching at their ends.
As the signals rush in
and are sorted and stored
in bits and pieces,
my heart begins
to swing and sway.

By the time this frenzied
activity has subsided,
I will have
the memory of you
playing Für Elise
for me
forever enshrined
in my mind.
