Celestial Metaphors
by Mike Acker
When the moon and the sun
have become plentiful what will
be left for poets to use
for their metaphors?
What bard would refer to a grain of sand
to describe the features of a lover’s face
or its gleam from bliss?
Why would the muser cite a drop of the ocean
to express the magnitude of quenching
that the sight of one’s beloved
brings to his or her soul?
And so, my friend, soon the sun and the moon
may no longer suffice, now that they are nothing
more than grains of sand
but mere drops in this foaming sea of galaxies.
On the other hand, after man has conquered
space and time and visited the dizzying number
of moons and suns of all the exoplanets, then maybe,
just maybe, Luna and Sol will regain their regal status
as the supreme metaphors of old.
