My Child Who Never Lived

by Jackson Arthur

And yet I continue to envision
my child who never lived
beyond dreams and imagination
but was loved just the same

His eyes mine or yours
an ocean or woodland
filled with both deep and wild
and full of the most vivid life

A charm to embrace the world
and the ability to leave it be
to love or be alone
and the will to seek out both

Blood and skin and flesh and bone
built and formed into beauty
and all wonderful possibilities
perfect and real and true

Within my mind my child survives
each and every potential explored
endless hopes and worlds existing
where death cannot reach

And as I continue to envision
my child who never lived
he or she in every fate
has never been more alive
