Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Socorro Venegas
Socorro Venegas has achieved renown in Mexican literature with her short stories and novels as well as her editorial work. Some of her works have been translated into English and French and have appeared in several anthologies.
“The Giant and the Moon,” translated by Toshiya Kamei, paints a stark picture of Candelaria, a young girl living in poverty with alcoholic parents. The family is not entirely destitute; when the mother wakes up, she does manage to take her daughter to school. But Candelaria is sent to search for her father. When she finds him, she’s carrying an empty bottle, and life seems to offer nothing better. The result is a cautionary tale of people locked in a cycle of hopelessness.
