“Surf Signals” will surely appeal to readers with its sympathetic portrayal of a beachcomber who is lonely, yearns for the open sea, and nevertheless has congenial friends. Is the narrator, “Captain Henley,” who he says he is? He seems to know a little too much about an erstwhile “friend,” William Ernest. And is the narrator passively suicidal? The question is open to discussion!
