Oscar Vladislas de Lubicz-Milosz

Oscar — can we call him Oscar? — was born east of Minsk in 1877. Was his native language Lithuanian or Polish? Whatever, he traveled widely in Europe and finally settled in Paris. In 1920, he was named Lithuania’s chargé d’affaires in France. Oscar published autobiographical poems in French about his childhood. He died in 1939, aparently while trying to corral an escaped pet canary at his home in Fontainebleau.

The Landau Pulled Up in the Night is Michael Wooff’s translation of La Berline arrêtée dans la nuit. The poem expresses wistful nostalgia for a family and an estate that have drifted into the distant past. Only an abandoned home remains to evoke distant memories.

Oscar Vladislas de Lubicz-Milosz’s bio sketch can be found here.

We’re looking forward to further translations.
