Back When We Were Mermaids

by Shauna Checkley

Back when we were mermaids
We swam freely
We sirens of the sea
Past blue pillars aqua walls
Liquid fluid infinity

Back when we were mermaids
We bobbed hobnobbed
With underworld royalty
Sea horse a star fish of course
That vast potion of ocean

Back when we were mermaids
Not just ship masts from days past
We wore wreaths of seaweed and shell
Played in the flotsam and jetsam
Few with us lived to tell

Then we crawled onto land
We grew a pair of legs
A backbone, a spine
We mermaids handed in our tails
We became milkmaids meter maids French maids
Of indignities we did rail

Then we stood upright
We tried to take a stand
But we were battered in the fight
Our scales dropped one by one
Like gold coins trickling down
Sand dollars now loosed
From our watery crown

Then we raised our fists
Mermaids in a school of fish
Mermaids in heels and power suits
After we conquered all above
We rolled up our pants legs
We slipped back into the sea
We became goddesses you and me
