Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...

Laura Cody

Laura is a forensic psychiatrist whose practice is in New York City. When asked whether she’s like the psychiatrist on the TV series Law and Order, her answer is intriguingly ambiguous.

Before medical school, Laura studied English at the University of Notre Dame. In addition to publishing professioal articles, she’s had success in fiction, especially short stories and flash.

Ridding the World of Vice” brings a genie who is somewhat on the neutral side to give Mr. Viceroy — a.k.a. “Vice” — a 24-hour life extension and one last chance to do a good deed. But some people are just no damn good, and Vice is one of them.

Is Vice a sociopath who’s hit rock bottom? In any event, he demonstrates what the Devil meant in C. S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters: when confronted with a rich man’s selfless philanthropic impulse, the Devil says not to worry, “I’ll organize it.” And that is precisely how Vice thinks.
