Tombstone, the Town Too Tough to Die

by LindaAnn LoSchiavo

In Tombstone, Arizona, dead men don’t
Lie still. They re-enact old gunfights, won’t
Stop flying those Confederate flags, grow
Outraged at the suggestion dynamo
Robert E. Lee surrendered, lost the war.

They’re placing bets about shoot-outs before
The outlaws threatened Wyatt Earp that day
At the O.K. Corral. Doc Holliday,
Though undefeated, killed a dozen more
By doing dentistry twelve years before.

Their tourist board decided the deceased
Had best stay buried. Sightseeing decreased.

Despite their bravery, it’s time for three
Earp brothers to enforce all death decrees.

Since corpses don’t vote, they can’t sport buckskin.
With tombs nailed shut, eternity moved in.
