Challenge 916
Double and Nothing
In Gabriel S. de Anda’s Castles in the Sky:
- Do the characters’ names reflect the characters’ function in the story?
So far, the story has two first-person narrators, Jose and Amado. What will happen to the narrative point of view and the pronoun “I” if the two characters meet?
In Jeffrey Greene’s Honest Philomena: Philomena goes to great lengths to exonerate her daughter in the killing and yet answer truthfully questions about her own involvement.
- What question or questions might the sheriff ask that would inadvertently force Philomena to reveal what she’s done?
When Philomena gives instructions to Enid about the killing, she tells her daughter how to cover her tracks and lie to the police. Does Philomena violate the rule of her own character whereby she cannot tell a lie? Or is Philomena’s “honesty” limited to herself alone?
